The moment came down to Max Santiago’s cannoli doughnut and a competitor’s caprese doughnut.
But on the Italian-themed episode of “Sugar Showdown” on the Cooking Channel on Wednesday, Sept. 14, it was Santiago, a Miami pastry chef, who took home the dough.
Santiago, one of three partners at gourmet doughnut shop Salty Donut, won $10,000 on the program’s Season 2 premiere, an “Iron Chef”-style competition in which contestants must make sweet treats using a mystery ingredient.
That ingredient? Fresh tomatoes — in a doughnut. Santiago’s cannoli doughnut, a deep-fried pastry filled with ricotta and tomato jam, dipped in pistachios and glazed with espresso-amaretto syrup, struck a chord with the three “Sugar Showdown” judges.
